Balance is what reflects the true meaning of our life and everything surrounding it. It is often neglected, misunderstood and gone unnoticed, but if observed keenly and with utmost devotion it is true to say balance is the key to success and happiness. Be it religion, fun, exams, work, home, relationship, exercise or the foods you eat, balance plays an important role towards maintaining stability in it all. With that you achieve what they say, ‘the best of both worlds’.
People often mistake balance with equality, I believe the right word to be used should rather be equity. Each portion of our life should be given the desired and rightful priority at the right time and at the right place. Whenever we talk about balance, it’s important to note that balance doesn’t always mean to be equal but rather be fair!
We’ve heard the term gender equality a lot of times especially from women. What majority of us fail to understand is, that there is a reason as to why men are created differently from women. Yes, I strongly believe women should be respected and given what they are entitled to, they shouldn’t be taken for granted either and their thoughts and presence should matter and always be appreciated. However treating men and women equally would not be fair for many reasons. For example, if a mother gave her little girl a doll house and the same to her little boy, would the little boy be happy with a doll house? Just understanding this basic difference between the terms equality and equity can help maintain peace and harmony. As equity is in getting what we want and should rightfully have and not what everyone has.
Let’s get back to balance! Take a minute, pause your life… Think about your day today? How much of balance were you able to achieve? Did you pray? Did you go to work? Did you hang out with friends or stay at home and watched something? Did you eat meat? Or did you eat it with some carbs and veggies? Doesn’t all this revolve around balance? Just imagine a whole day at university attending lectures, not hanging out with friends or doing any fun activity, coming home and reading continuously, no sleeping… See what I mean? An unbalanced day like that is unimaginable isn’t it? It could get you depressed, stressed out and unhappy.
So how exactly can we maintain balance in our life? This may sound tricky but trust me it really isn’t. All we need is to look at a bigger picture and not just do what may seem right at that moment. Set your priorities and goals, include things that you may not entirely like but you know will benefit you. Set sometime aside for leisure too and most importantly time for your family and loved ones. Some people work the whole day, come home tired and just want to sleep. Yes, they’ll earn some extra bucks, but is that worth it when it’s affecting your happiness and health too? Same applies to having a balanced meal; I’ll talk about that in detail in my next segment…stay tuned!
Life without proper balance would be meaningless. Like a glass of salty water, full to the brim yet cannot quench thirst.
Live to balance and balance to live!!
